Ford, Baglino Lead Way in Legends 6-4 Victory Over CPBA

Adan Baglino reached base all four times for the Legends, recording three singles and a walk. Justin Ford drove three of the Legends’ six runs in on a double and a single. The Legends got to CPBA pitcher Frankie Venezia in the top of the first inning. Venezia consistently pounded the strike zone in the inning, but Adian Baglino and Ty Fredo recorded base hits to center field to put runners on first and second base with two outs. Justin Ford then came in clutch with a laser down the left-field line. The ball reached the fence on one hop, and given the field’s large dimensions, Ford attempted to stretch the hit to a triple. A nice relay by CPBA nailed Ford at third to end the inning, but not before two runs scored to give the Legends a 2-0 lead. Joseph Lopinto took the mound to start the game for the Legends. He got out of the first inning unscathed after allowing two straight walks with two outs. Venezia settled in in the second, retiring Legends’ hitters Giovanni Aresta and Noah Stennett on strikes. The curve was working for Venezia, who was able to drop it in for strikes and get swings and misses. CPBA shortstop Evan Thomas made a nice sliding play, ranging to his right to retire Brian Lovaglio and end the top of the second.

The good defense continued on the other side as Justin DeStaso made a nice sliding play on a dying popup at second base, and Ty Fredo charged a weak ground ball to beat Angelo Celli by a step.  The Legends added a run in the top of the third inning in an inning where Venezia appeared to be cruising once again. Collin Feeney started the damage with a two-out single to center field on a hard-ground ball. Feeney then stole second before Aidan Baglino hit a line drive into left field to bring Feeney home. CPBA’s offense heated up in the bottom of the fourth inning off Joseph LoPinto. Matthew Myers started the inning with a ground ball into right field for a base hit. Dylan Santos continued the offensive success with a triple off the left field wall to plate Myers. Santos then scored on a sacrifice fly by Angelo Celli to cut the Legends’ lead to 3-2 heading into the fifth inning. Zach Wernick replaced Frankie Venezia in the top of the fifth inning, ending Venezia's evening with four innings pitched, six hits, three earned runs, and five strikeouts. Wernick cruised in the fifth, pitching a one-two-three inning.  LoPinto, on the other hand, continued pitching in the fifth inning, running into trouble in the form of a leadoff single by Matt Fernandez followed by a walk to Luis Saldivia. Trevor Santos later drove both Fernandez and Saldivia in with a single to right field, giving CPBA their first lead of the game. Legends’ third baseman Justin Ford made a spectacular over-the-shoulder basket catch on a pop-up into shallow left field to end the inning. The hit would have scored another run for CPBA had Ford not made the catch. LoPinto’s day ended after five innings.

Over the five innings, he allowed five hits, five walks, four earned runs, and recorded four strikeouts. CPBA didn’t hold the lead for long. Collin Feeney walked, and Aidan Baglino hit an infield single to give the Legends some energy in the top of the sixth inning. Feeney then scored after CPBA’s catcher threw the ball down to second base to try to throw out the stealing Baglino. Justin Ford drove in the second run of the inning on a single to left, and Giovanni Aresta would bring in a third run on a triple into the left-center field gap. CPBA threatened in both the eighth and ninth inning against Legends’ pitcher William Collins. CPBA failed to score in the eighth after Trevor Santos singled up the middle and Jake Leonard walked. In the ninth inning, Luis Saldivia came up to bat with runners on first and second with two outs. Saldivia was the go-ahead run, but Collins bore down and struck him out on an inside fastball to end the game. The Legends continued their impressive season, improving their record to 16-7, while CPBA fell to 10-11 on the year
