Legends Beat Untamed on Walk-Off Balk

On a hot evening at Weequahic Park, Legends Baseball came out on top 4-3 in a close seven-inning affair with Untamed Baseball.

Untamed’s unforced errors were the difference in the game, as three errors and a balk accounted for three of the Legends’ four runs. Joseph LoPinto started on the mound for Legends Baseball. In the top of the first inning, he gave up a line drive to left field to Jack Burke, followed by a line drive double that sailed over the right fielder’s head and went to the wall. Untamed had runners on second and third with only one out, but LoPinto got out of the inning unscathed on a strikeout and a groundout to the shortstop. In the bottom of the second inning,

Legends Baseball struck first off Untamed’s pitcher, Mason Fischer. All-star Ty Fredo, a contestant in Tuesday night's Home Run Derby, continued mashing as he hit a long home run over the left-center field fence. Fischer gave up two more hits in the inning but held the damage to one run. LoPinto worked his magic again in the top of the third inning for the Legends as he got Patrick Coyne to ground into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play following two straight singles by Michael Mele and Jack Burke. The Legends added two more runs off Fischer in the bottom of the third inning. The inning began with a ground ball to first, but Collin Feeney would reach as first baseman Matthew Motiwalla bobbled the ball. Tommy Burns then hit an infield single deep into the shortstop hole, and Karson Harcourt reached on a bunt single to third base, loading the bases with no one out. The errors continued to haunt Untamed Baseball as second baseman Stefon Johnson was unable to handle a chopper up the middle from Nick Bergamotto. The ball could’ve been a double play ball, but instead, everyone was safe. The next batter, Ty Fredo, drove in another run when he grounded into a fielder's choice to the shortstop, but the Legends weren’t able to plate any more runs as Fredo was caught stealing, and Joey Pagano grounded out to first to end the inning.

Joey DiQuollo came in to pitch in the top of the fourth inning for the Legends. Joseph LoPinto’s final line was three innings pitched, four hits, one walk, three strikeouts, and no earned runs. DiQuollo allowed two runners on an infield single and a walk in the top of the fourth inning, but Collin Feeney made a nice running catch in right-center field to end the inning and keep the Legends lead at 3-0. DiQuollo ran into more trouble in the top of the fifth after a leadoff walk and an infield single. He would settle in, striking out Michael Mele, and retiring both Jack Burke and Patrick Coyne on groundouts. DiQuollo turned runners on second and third with no outs into no runs through his strong pitching. Untamed’s second pitcher on the night, Liam Royster, pitched well, striking out the side in the bottom of the fifth inning and holding the Legends scoreless in the sixth.

Untamed got on the board in the top of the sixth as Max Oswald hit a liner just inches over the leaping first baseman for a double, and Daniel Cowles and Jack Tone walked to load the bases with no outs against Legends pitcher Sean DuBois. Stefon Johnson and Spencer Nicely each brought a run in on an RBI groundout to pull within one run. William Collins came in to try to close the game out for the Legends in the top of the seventh. Untamed had other ideas as Nicolas Lorenzo lined a single into left field, and Michael Mele followed with a single of his own, allowing Lorenzo to reach third. Patrick Coyne came in clutch as he tied the game at 3-3 with a ground out to the shortstop. Collins held Untamed there, but the damage was already done, and the game went to the bottom of the seventh. Sidearmer Vince Taylor came in for Untamed in the bottom of the seventh. The first batter for the Legends, Ryan Beauregard, hit a ground ball to third baseman Nicolas Lorenzo. Lorenzo rushed the throw sending it into the turf and through the legs of first baseman Daniel Cowles. This allowed Beauregard to reach second with no outs. Taylor appeared to settle in as he struck out the next two batters, including All-Star Collin Feeney. Taylor, however, began to struggle after this, hitting Tommy Burns and giving up a single to Karson Harcourt. Beauregard was unable to score on the single as the left fielder was playing in.

The Legends would win in an unexpected way as Vince Taylor balked, allowing the runners to advance and plating Ryan Beauregard for the 4-3 win. Legends Baseball improves to 14-6 on the year, while Untamed Baseball falls to 4-14.
